What is a naturopath?

Naturopathy is a system of holistic health care that encompasses the specific use of natural medicines such as western herbal medicine, nutritional supplements and dietary advice, homeopathic medicines, flower essences and aromatherapy essential oils for the treatment of various health problems.

Naturopaths are health care practitioners who are trained in both science and natural medicine.
What health problems may benefit from natural medicine?

Naturopathy is a gentle, safe and effective form of treatment for the whole family and may be used to assist with a various health problems including ;

  • Digestive problems (constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, food intolerances, heartburn, indigestion etc)
  • Skin conditions (acne, eczema/dermatitis, urticaria, rashes etc)
  • Respiratory problems ( recurrent colds/flu, asthma, sinus congestion, allergic rhinitis etc)
  • Menstrual issues ( PMS, painful or irregular menses, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis etc)
  • Fertility and preconception care (including low/poor sperm quality/count)
  • Children's health care (recurrent colds/flu, sinus problems, glue ear, colic, wind, constipation, allergies, eczema, sleeping difficulties etc)
How long does a naturopathic consultation last for and what should I expect?

Initial consultations typically take an hour and involve a thorough case history as well as a detailed look at your diet, lifestyle and current stresses. Physical Examination as well as specific tests (e.g. food allergy tests, hair analysis testing etc) may be conducted.

An individualised treatment plan is then outlined for you which may include various natural medicines as well as dietary and lifestyle advice.
Can I take natural medicines with my medication from my doctor?

Many natural medicines can be taken in conjunction with medication prescribed by your doctor. However, there are a small number of natural medicines which are not appropriate to take with certain prescriptive medications. Your naturopath is trained to be aware of such interactions and will advise you accordingly.
How long does it take to work?

Natural medicines are gentle and therefore often need to be taken for a longer period of time before you see an improvement in your health. Most people with chronic health problems experience positive changes within 2 weeks of starting a course of natural medicine. Your existing state of health, current medications and lifestyle will all affect how quickly you may respond.

Your naturopath will be able to give you a more accurate indication once she has more information about your health and your particular health problem.
